Just a bit of fun, a bear-spirit character design based a little off a totem pole. Turned out more Disney then I had wanted, but I'm generally pleased with the damn feet, which I researched and drew a thousand different ways.And it was nice to get into this little dude, and get closer to the character. yadda yadda

J-Popping

Howdy all. This is just a little sketch-thought-process- fun to reveal a little bit of the subject matter of my piece for the J-Pop Culture. Just a quick sketch, and a horrible photograph since I've got a caput scanner. The final piece, as you'll see when I post it, will be digital.

textures. Again. finished this a tiny bit ago, fixed it with some touchups today. Not very happy with the RGB for web conversion, seemed to gray it down a bit more than I like.

I enjoy Finn's face. YES.

Sooo I like to tease people instead of giving them the whole magilla.

Actually, my film still isn't quite finished to the point I want it to be, so I don't like the idea of uploading an unfinished piece to the world before its done. At least with film, anyway.

Sorry for the delay, and then this less than exciting post. o.O;

Charcoal, inkwash, colored pencil, and pastels are used throughout the film.

Perhaps I'll make a teaser-trailer to post....

An interesting read

For all you animators, aspiring animators, and animation lovers out there- I would highly recommend reading if not buying this book. Based of the lectures of Disney's amazingly talented animator/drawing teacher Walt Stanchfield, this book is a lovely step away from those ruddy how-to books. I'd hail this as spectacularly informative as Richard Williams' "Animation Survival Kit", and I personally feel this book has indeed retained the author's (deceased before the book was published) voice and uncanny love for his craft. I couldn't help but be uplifted and inspired by the passages, and entranced by the photographs of animation "treasures" such as keyframes from Milt Kahl, T. Hee, as well as many others.

Here is one particular bit I was captivated by early on in the book-

"...quick sketching is the shortest route to training yourself for capturing those spontaneous gestures and poses that are so essential to good drawing. Break one of your bad habits today. Which one? That habit of not sketching! ... Listen to some jazz, some symphony, a string quintet, and some contry music. Stop everything and just listen...Feel the leaves of a sycamore tree, a wad of cotton, a piece of sandpaper. Pick up a stone from the beach or from the mountains and fondle it. See if it has a message for you...Sharpen your senses in all ways. Life will open up its vistas of adventure and courage and venturesomeness. Then, when you make a sketch you will feel an authoritateve confidence flow into it. It will have the rhytmns of the music you heard, the drama of the books you have read, and the tactile influence of all the things you have touched."

Walt's passion and energy makes for a spectacular read, especially to those who share his everlasting love for animation, art, life, and all aspects inbetween.

I just wanted to say, again, how it is always such a pleasure to come onto this blog and not only look at all the wonderful, indivualistic pieces you put up here- But to see the energy you guys really have for your art. So far- you guys are making it an awesome new year, and 2008 was more than amazing. KEEP POSTING.

Different note- here's a sketch I had a friend scan for me two days ago and just recieved. So- I am sharing. It's not really for anything, but I've been wanting to post for quite a while now. Having no scanner = good times.
