I just thought I'd share a few images from a set of ancient C.D. Gibson books that I acquired from a friend while working on his house. Gibson really knew how to describe form quickly and easily with line. His drawings were simply amazing...especially crowd scenes and interiors. Flipping through the pages made me really curious about the way people lived their lives way back when Gibson sat down to sketch. This was a time (1890's) before the proliferation of cars, where people said "while I was on my wheel" rather than "while I was riding my bike." The books are an odd, beautiful, and artistically inspiring glimpse of a master illustrators work. Enjoy!

The way that line translates how the curves of the face are and the way that portraits are masterfully stylized while still retaining a sort of realism is one that I have only dreamed about.

my realtor actually has like 15-20 CDG framed prints in his office. so awesome. it was like a gallery show when we signed the lease.
used to l-o-v-e Rackham and the old masters of the illo. Now I l-o-v-e relative newbies like Ian Francis, and a few other stream of consciousness artists.....And I've thought about framing the pages (cuz the books are 110 yrs old and the bindings are shot)....we'll see!
