I usually don't post thumbnails, but here's what I've been working on for The Miami Herald. It's a spot illustration for their business section, which is about some of the problems in the economy right now. I'll post the finish in a few days.
The economic outlook for 2009 is bleak, with few bright spots on the horizon. Thanks to the inate weakness of the human body and the ingenuity of pharmaceutical companies, the healthcare industry remains strong. Almost everyone else is either miserable or will be soon. Experts predict 8 to 8.5 percent unemployment in South Florida well into 2011 (although other indicators may come back before then). Tourism had been OK up until recently, but a growing European recession will cut off an important supply of visitors. Home sales are starting to pick up, but prices continue to fall.
