The illustration is meant to be used on the cover of a handout, which will provide information about the summer booklist. I also did a few spots to place in the interior. The particular booklist I was working for is meant for teens, and the client really wanted something fun and exciting to bring the target audience in.
Okay, so here's the initial sketch. This was approved by the art director at the library, but the client ultimately felt it was too "cutesy" and not "urban" enough.
Ok, back to the drawing board. With the huge interest in fantasy/fiction at the moment - think Twilight, and Harry Potter(s) - the client thought something dark and magical could work well. After 2 more rounds of sketches, we came to the final.
Catherine Harvey will be doing the design work, which is not yet complete. So...imagine fun type.Whatcha think?

THis is A-mazing!
these look so great! i'm floored. the color scheme is great, and i love those little spot sections. the book in particular.
i'm actually a little sad that the sketch you posted didn't make it to finish, it's a really clever idea as well.
These are brilliant, the drawing is top notch, that initial sketch is also really impressive, these illustrations really breathtaking!
Hey guys, thank you so much for the comments!!
Wow, I would have never thought of the New York Library of taking an illustration like this for a summer promo, but I guess you never really know what anyone wants till some discussion is done.
These are very beautiful illustrations Jackie!
Thanks, I know - I felt so weird making a sexy goth girl for the Library, but that's what they wanted. I guess you never know?
