I totally agree with the idea of the artist / writer getting paid for ALL of their work, but I've seen this around and I can't completely understand Ellison's point.

He wants to get paid for his work (which he was) and auxiliary work (an interview) that he did in relation to work he was already paid for? That he wouldn't be doing if he didn't have the work in the first place?

He's my favorite author of all time, no joke, but this particular argument falls flat for me. He's the most litigious human alive today, so maybe that makes his accusations and self-entitlement a little harder to take seriously.

I think it's a usage right. It's like Yuko Shimizu's illustration used for an Mtv calendar; that was one contract. It was then used in every Subway platform in NYC to promote something else. That's a different contract and the usage is completely DIFFERENT than the original purpose. Therefore the image has to be paid for usage once again. I would assume it works the same way for Harlan!

THAT makes more sense to me! Thanks, Kim. I knew I was missing some kind of clarity.

Harlan Ellison seems to be insane, and have temper problems, but I do agree that artists should be paid for their work, and are not paid, or not paid appropriately too often.

I'm guilty of discounting for publicity and charity, but I also need to pad my illustration portfolio right now. Hopefully I'll finish my book some day and that would push me into the professional realm for good. Then I can be elitist and ask for what pieces are really worth!

ha! easier said than done, but we need this extremist position; we are too hard on ourselves and too afraid to value ourselves as much as we should. hard balance under the circumstances of starting

How is he insane? Because he doesn't want to take shit from people? It's surprising how many people are willing. It's not surprising that he feels strongly about it.
