Building Bridges

Building Bridges, 13.5x16.75, colored pencil/digital

Hey Autumn peoples. The above is a promo piece I did recently. I'm trying to update my portfolio with pieces that are illustrations of common editorial themes, and this one is about "building bridges." I tried to expand on my normal vocab and went with a turn of the century Japanese setting, rather than the more typical man-in-suit. I like it overall, so here's hoping the other pieces go well, uh, as well. Would love to know what you think.

Here's some details. One of the interesting things I found was the 2nd detail shot is like a little piece inside the illustration. Neato, eh?

I like the experimenting with themes a whole bunch here, definitely stands out in subject matter compared to the rest of your portfolio. I think the colors and background and drawing here really stands out. If I had to critique I would say that the left arm/hand holding the bridge maybe don't match up right? And that His left hand kind of disappears behind that bridge. I would also maybe consider getting rid of the pencil outline on the water around his waist, to make it look a little softer. Minor quibbles for a successful new piece.

Tim, this piece is beautiful. love the color scheme (it's my kind of palette!) and the swirls in the sky are so nice. i've been wanting to do that sort of thing in my work and i just can't make it happen, so hats off to you.

I have to agree with eamon, that the hand on our right, his left hand, looks a little funny. something about the angle and stuff just feels off to me. maybe you could sneak some fingertips coming from behind the bridge? anyway, small thing
this is a big fat success!

wow i remember loving the detail of the lady from the earlier post but who knew it was a fraction of this epic! you're sure to get great editorial work with this! the concept is loud and clear and that's what will grab most art directors
