Hey guys,
Just wanted to share a sketch that I recently finished for a piece I'll have included in a charity art auction fundraiser that will be held this Spring. But first, a little backstory: Mike "Daarken" Lim is a working concept artist and freelance illustrator who's girlfriend, Cat, was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 25 earlier in 2009 . She is now recovering from her treatment and surgery but the medical bills and toll it took on her mentally and physically have been overwhelming, so Mike and his friend, Leif Jeffers (an animator at DreamWorks) organized this fundraiser to help her out. The proceeds of the auction will go to paying off Cat's medical bills and the remaining funds will go to a breast cancer related charity.
There will be a show held with the artwork at a soon to be determined venue this Spring. Over 200 artists have joined in for the cause and submissions have been capped due to gallery space.

an amazing piece, for an amazing cause, with some AMAZING company you now keep! no surprise to me that you'd be rubbing elbows with someone like Jon Foster! congrats
so we've talked about this already, but this seems like a really cool project to be a part of, both cause of the company and the cause and you definitely are going to hold your own with this drawing! the face and hands in particular turned out really well.

that's a tough call Eric. i mean, on one hand, it's a charitable fundraiser for a really good cause, and as hard as it is to give up an original (especially one as lovely as this), it might do a ton of good being it is worth so much more.
that being said however....the last time i donated a piece to charity, i donated a bunch of prints. my reasoning was that it was unrealistic of me to put up originals with a high starting bid (as if it was a gallery show) and expecting it to sell. it was more feasible to me that i could "sell" 5 prints for $20 than it was to think someone would buy a single thing for $100.
i'm sure that didn't help much, but maybe e-mail daarkenart@daarken.com and ask him what people are doing and what would be the best way to raise the most money. my guess is, if you can bear to part with it, someone will LOVE having that incredible original drawing
believe it or not, that's EXACTLY what I was thinking, just wasn't sure since I had never donated something before. I was thinking that if I send them 5 pieces of artist proofs, they'd still hold a bit of value but would be way more affordable to people who are interested in purchasing pieces from the show. I'll email Mike right now and see what he thinks. Thanks so much for your input!
