The Tomb

I'm a huge Lovecraft fan, so when Sam Heimer mentioned he was putting together a show devoted entirely to his works I immediately started thinking of what story I would do. One of my favorite, The Tomb, is about a young man discovering a door barred by a rusted chain. Strange dreams occupy his nights and he begins to know things he has no business knowing. Hope you guys dig the piece and, better than that, read the actual story.  You can download a complete collection of H.P. Lovecraft's works here. Thanks to Cthulhu Chick for putting together the compilation!

Such a Long Time

Heeeey everybody. It's been such a long time since I posted here, and so many new people, I thought that I should reintroduce myself for all of the unfamiliar faces.
I'm a freelance illustrator and comic book artist who's been showing with the Autumn Society since I was a junior at UArts in '07. I work out of my Fishtown studio with the amazing Christine Larsen, doing a lot of work for Ape Entertainment, local magazines and fantasy card games for the most part. I'm the co-creator and artist of the webcomic Lineage.
So, I hope to be posting here more regularly! If you guys wanna check out some more stuff here a blog and here's a website. Loving all the work on here!

ImagineFX

Mmm. Glossy print.
Over a year ago I was contacted by the folks at ImagineFX, a major fantasy and digital art magazine, about having my work featured in an upcoming issue. This is a magazine that I’ve bought for my own use, so I was pretty thrilled. With past contributors like Joao Ruas, Justin Sweet and John Howe I was proud to be invited to have my work on its pages. I believe this issue is in stores in May, so check it out at you local book store that also has a pretty big magazine section.

As a side note, I recently took down my site and rebuilt it in an even more spartan, bare bones manner. I'd love to know what you guys think, so check out www.timdurning.com. Thanks!

Lineage, a webcomic

Hey Autumn Society folks. I've been quietly working on a comic with writer/bud Michael Taggart. Mike and I have collaborated on lots of projects in the past and this is by far our most ambitious. The story revolves around a small cast of characters set in a new sci-fi universe, but reading the comic and checking out the website can describe it better than I can here.

I wanted to keep it under wraps until we had a good amount of backlogged pages, promising I would start making it public in the new year. With the coming of 2011 and 15 pages, we decided now was the time to start going public with our work. The project has allowed me to experiment with new ways of working and there is a lot to look forward to as it evolves.
The comic is drawn to fit the screen, and working horizontally has been a new experience itself. I hope you check out the work and if you like the story so far, check out the website for updates every Wednesday at www.lineagecomic.com.

Included here is the intro scene. Enjoy.

The Anchor Collection @ Goldmine Unlimited

Hello Autumn Society,

I would like to announce my fortunate position as curator of a micro gallery located @ Goldmine Unlimited. The gallery/reading room is an intimate little space to hang and enjoy art. Each month I plan on having three person shows, and I am actively taking submissions. If interested, submissions should include 7 pieces in jpg format, via email. I will hand pick artists each month, dependent on themes and intermingling of the artists' works. I am also considering the possibility of solo and salon -style group shows for the future...

The current exhibiting artists are Reau, Tim Durning, and Stephanie Struse until Feb. 10th. The next show, Paper Heart will open on Friday, February 12th from 6pm-whenever. I'm still in search of one more artist and 7 pieces loosely pertaining to love (in keeping with that ol' Valentine's Day Spirit)!

Watch that last step..

11.75x12", graphite/digital

Hey guys. Just wanted to share a cover image I did for the Indypendent. It's been a while since I've done a piece for them, but it's hard to turn down the chance for a cover. The main focus in this issue is disillusionment with Obama's first year in office. They approached me looking for a Messianic portrayal of Obama, but a faulty one. I gave them a few options, but they went with Sketch 3 and asked me to make it a bit more dynamic. In any case, looking forward to seeing the piece in print. Enjoy!

Cloud Computing

Cloud Computing, 12x15", graphite/ink/digital

Hey peeps, long time no post. Just wanted to share a new piece with you guys. It's an illustration about cloud computing. The general concept is that your computer is a way to access this larger capability and that you have 1 source for the data, rather than eah computer being an island unto itself. I tried some new things with this piece- switching up the paper and medium of the drawing, getting into some more ink work, and incorporating some vector elements. In any case, hope you guys like it.

This Friday: Unlimited Editions @ Goldmine Unlimited

The works of Reau, Stephanie Struse, and Tim Durning.

Me working on the gallery, Bo Lee: owner and dreamer behind Goldmine.

This Friday the best store on this earth (imho), Goldmine Unlimited, unveils its Micro Gallery.....all 88 sq ft of it. The show spotlights the impressive illustrations of Reau, Tim Durning, and Stephanie Struse and will run for a month. I'm thrilled to be the curator of this fine show, involving these fine people.

famous for having two moleskine sketchbooks is his pockets at all times and for painting Wolverine every week for an entire year; spends so much of his time illustrating that this gallery appearance is a rare occasion indeed.

Tim Durning:
knows how to make a compelling image; cerebral; allegorical; sequential. Studious and insightful.

Stephanie Struse:
makes portraits with paint, cut paper, and captivating whimsy.

The artworks alone are good enough reason to take a trip down Main St. Manayunk but consider this...because of a chance meeting (involving a hunt for little plastic army men) what was once a storage room has transformed into a new kind of gallery spot, in a less likely neighborhood, in less than a month. This little wonder has a lot going for it, but what really got me is that it's an unexpected little gem and a place for art where art is most needed. Thanks to Bo Lee for making it happen. Hope to see you there!

ASOP Wallpapers

Hey guys. I loved the ASOP logo that Sam did and had some fun making wallpapers (just goofing off). Anyway, I thought I would share them in the off chance that anyone took a liking to them. Enjoy!

Grief Through Times of Strife

Grief Through Times of Strife, 21x16", Colored pencil/digital

Hey everybody. A little while ago I posted a piece in a promotional series dealing with common themes in editorial art- this is the newest addition. The piece is about those times when the world outside you is as tumultuous as your internal distress. Bad timing, right? I'm happy with how it turned out, though to a certain extent I wish I had experimented with some new processes during the piece- just to maybe get some new effects in there. Would love to hear your thoughts, thanks guys.

Building Bridges

Building Bridges, 13.5x16.75, colored pencil/digital

Hey Autumn peoples. The above is a promo piece I did recently. I'm trying to update my portfolio with pieces that are illustrations of common editorial themes, and this one is about "building bridges." I tried to expand on my normal vocab and went with a turn of the century Japanese setting, rather than the more typical man-in-suit. I like it overall, so here's hoping the other pieces go well, uh, as well. Would love to know what you think.

Here's some details. One of the interesting things I found was the 2nd detail shot is like a little piece inside the illustration. Neato, eh?

Wendigo for the Creature Show

Wendigo, 14.75x16", Ink on Rives BFK

Hey all. Next month at Brave New Worlds the Philadelphia Cartoonists' Society is hosting its Creature Double Feature show. Members are all taking a crack at interpreting the word creature and drawing all of manner of monsters. The one caveat being that no digital pieces could be submitted for the show itself. It was a neat rule especially because for so many of us...ahem..the computer is essential to the finished piece. I was happy to get the chance to try out some ink work.

In anycase, here's a wendigo! The Northern American mythic beast who ravages the woods and eats the flesh of man, seemingly endless in its hunger. Because so much of the wendigo myth focuses around greed and cannibalism, I tried to make grotesqueries of its mouth, hands, and emaciated skeletal frame. Hope you guys like it, see you at Brave New Worlds, November 6th.

PS: I've been working some new promo work, above is a very small crop of one. Hope you enjoy.

Dia de los Muertos

Dia de los Muertos, 6.385x10.25", graphite & digital

Hi all, I wasn't sure if I would be submitting to the show this time around, time permitting, but thankfully I was able to get something together. Like a lot of people I was really intrigued by the tradition surrounding the marigolds in relation to the holiday, and moreover how they were used to attract the ghosts. So, we have a young ghost boy spectrally floating around one of the "Flor de Muerto" (thank you, Wikipedia.)

Hope you guys enjoy it.

A Piece on Golf

Hey y'all. I'm happy to say that I just wrapped up a job for the New York Times this past weekend, and it went to print today. They were great to work with, super positive, and it was cool to see the piece go through various transformations through the art direction. In any case, hope you guys like it. Thanks and see you at the Dia de Los Muertos show.

NC's Shadow

Hey guys. Here's another fun study I did while playing around with sketches. First and foremost- has any other artist done this? I did a search, and it seemed like an obvious choice for a parody, but I didn't find anything. So, if I'm late to the game here, let me know. Otherwise, enjoy some purple shadows. Thanks!

Video Game Studies

Hey gang. It's been a hectic week, so I wanted to sit down in my free time and work on some brief studies for my contribution to the video game show.

I'm going to tackle what is, hands down, my favorite video game ever made. It's beautiful, mysterious, and filled with this ancient and legendary vibe. I don't know how my piece is going to come together yet, but I'm having a ball getting reference and doing sketches. Thanks.

Something New

The Wreck, 4.25x7.5, ink on Rives BFK

Hey All. Firstly, thank you to everyone who made it out to Shane and my opening on Friday- it meant a lot to see so many of you cool kids come out to the show.

The above is the last piece I made for the show, and it's something new I've been trying out with going a little more traditional using just ink and a brush. I can't remember what it was that made me want to try my hand at this kind of drawing, but I've been in love with people who work in a similar fashion: Paul Pope, Jeff Smith, Charles Burns, etc. So when I stopped at an art store to get a new table, I threw in some brushes and a nice little green bottle of black ink. Hope you guys enjoy, and for those of you that missed the opening the show at Chapterhouse should be up until (I believe..) September 10th. Thanks!

It Flew at Sunset, 14.5x19.5, pencil/ink/digital
Update: Here's the piece I posted a sketch for below.
