Hi there!

Hey there. My name's Jaclyn Sinquett, and I'm new to this blog - so thanks for the invite!

I'm working full time as a graphic designer for the book publishing company, Farrar Straus Giroux, up in Manhattan - but I'm also freelance illustrating. Since graduating in May from UArts in Philly, I've been working hard at FSG and have done two book covers - see below, a post from my blog:

Since starting work at FSG back in June, I've been fortunate enough to land the job of illustrating two book covers. The first was mostly photo manipulation, which isn't necessarily my particular medium of choice, but I think the finish turned out very well despite that fact. Sometimes using old, black and white photos on a jacket cover can feel really creepy, dusty, and dated - thus, the challenge. I thought making the image look more like a poster with an invigorating color scheme would draw young readers in - you know, outside of the involuntary withdraw from the library for a book report. Blogger seems to want to flatten the colors here, but just pretend it's about 3 shades brighter/stronger.

UPDATE: here's the cover WITH type - the designer's name is Jay Colvin!

After Claudette came the opportunity to illustrate for the cover of a book called Eidi. It's part 2 in a series of books called The Series of Crow Cove, and it's by Bodil Bredsdorff. This time I got to actually draw something, which made me crazy happy. The piece was very heavily art directed, as the editor and author knew exactly what they wanted to see. I was thrilled beyond words at just getting the chance, so I hopped on board and tried my best to create their vision. It's perhaps a bit more soft and confined than I'd have chosen to go, but I think the overall finished piece is still quite nice.

I was also fortunate enough to get to design the book as well, which is a rare thing. So, click below to see my illustration and design combo for Eidi, due to be released in Fall of 2009.

Thanks for looking! More soon.
