GRID Cover

I recently worked with Art Director Jamie Leary on an illustration for the cover of GRID Magazine, a local publication that focuses on living more sustainably in Philadelphia. Each issue focuses on a particular issue, and this one is the FOOD issue. They wanted a cover that communicated the idea of local farmers banding together via a co-op to take on big agribusiness. I couldn’t help but think of a certain “giant” so most of my sketches revolved around a David vs Goliath concept. Another idea I had was the idea of “food power” showing a raised fist made out of crops.

In the end we went with the 3rd one. I normally work with a much flatter perspective, or none at all, so this was an interesting departure from my usual style of composition.

very nice. the third was definitely my favorite of your sketches, though the big fist is a close second. the finish turned out great, and i think the depth actually works nicely with your style. the crop has a kind of wallpaper feel which is very cool.
