La Colaboraćion

"In Mexico the first and second of November belong to the dead. According to popular belief, the deceased have divine permission to visit friends and relatives on earth, and to share the pleasures of the living." - Chloe Sayer, Mexico: The Day of the Dead: An Anthology

"La Colaboraćion", Pen and Ink, Photoshop

This is my submission for the Dia de los Muertos Show. It's a self-portrait with my Uncle Mike, who was a great artist and art teacher, and who was probably the person most responsible for making wee little Jay B. think that an artist was a really cool thing to be. He loved Halloween and he used to make my brother and I Halloween cards decorated with Roger-Dean-meets-Tim-Burton pumpkin landscape type imagery (I know, right? Even on the envelopes! )
He was smart and brave and wickedly sarcastic.
He was thoughtful and generous to a fault.
He'd love this.

That's him there with my boy.

What an amazing tribute and piece of Illustration. Love the reds and all the little details (like the skeleton Baseball figure). So delighted that you are part of the show and viva Uncle Mike!

Great piece jay, I thought that it looked like you in there, and was surprised to see it was. The drawing is awesome, I love the how the skull has a bobble head quality to it.

Jay,

Not only is that piece breathtaking, but of all the people who posted their work for this upcoming show, you're the only person who's piece seems to have a point. Not only is that highly visible, but you took the time to share with us the back story, and I really appreciate that.

you KNOW this is awesome, jay. definitely one of if not the most "weighty" of the submissions for this show. at the risk of sounding a little lame, it's got a real emotional resonance. looking forward to seeing it/you at the show!

This is really a great piece, Jay! I really like the back story behind the image and it works perfect for it. Emotional and definitely has that familiar warmth to it. I'm excited to see this one in person. See you at the show!
