ICONOCLASTIC DEAD - SPECIAL GUEST (ALBERTO CERRITENO)

As you all know, we're about to hit Mexico City hard (in a good way) with the Autumn Society's "THE ICONOCLASTIC DEAD," with our second international show, this time in Mexico City. This show has been an absolute dream come true for me. To be surrounded by friends, fellow artists, and special guest artists that I respect and look up to. On that vein, it my pleasure to present to you another one of our very special guests, Alberto Cerriteno.

Here's a description of Alberto's piece, "El Catrín" from his blog

"My piece entitled "El Catrín" represents the namesake urban legend from a little old town in Guanajuato, Mexico called San Juan de Dios where locals claims to have seen the ghost of this elegant man who made suicide around the third decade of the 20th century. The story says he killed his wife and then regretted hanged himself and to these days you could see him walking around in a park of the same town looking for his lost love. Nowadays in Mexico the word "Catrín" is a synonym for an elegant and dressed up man."

FRIDAY FEATURE: ICONOCLASTIC DEAD - SPECIAL GUEST (JORGE GUTIERREZ)

As the Iconoclastic Dead show approaches, it is my great pleasure to reveal some of the amazing special guests we have in store for the show.

Up first is a man who has influenced me and keeps inspiring me as I write this post. It is an honor have Jorge Gutierrez joining us for the Iconoclastic Dead.

Jorge is known for his Luchador / Dia de los Muertos (very Mexican) drawing style, his Super Macho cartoons, his company MEXOPOLIS (with his wife and partner Sandra Equihua), and one of my favorite cartoon shows, EL TIGRE!

Jorge chose to portray the great Mexican revolutionary legend and hero, Emiliano Zapata, who is known for the slogan "Tierra y Libertad" (Land and Freedom). Read more about him here or by clicking the image below.

I became of fan of Jorge's work when I befriended Eric Gonzalez (from my internship at Cartoon Studios in 2006). Eric introduced me to Jorge's & Sandra's work, as well as their 2005 pilot for EL TIGRE! I was hooked!

Chogrin with Jorge's "Viva Zapata"

Since then, I've watched about every episode of el Tigre and always look forward to any new project Jorge is working on. Another reason I admire Jorge (from a latino point of view) is because he wears his heritage on his sleeve proudly.

I could keep going and nerding out, but you can see for yourself how creative and inspiring Jorge is in the following videos. Viva Jorge!

Memento Mori

Hey People,

Well here's my Painting for the Day of the Dead show (better late than never, I suppose). I was really happy with how it turned out and equally bummed that I couldn't make it to the event. It is titled "Memento Mori" (Remember Death).

When Things Don't Get Done.

Here's a sob story to make you all feel better about your productivity. :)

So, sometimes, even with your most frantic efforts, things just don't get done. I had signed up to be part of the Dia De Los Muertos show, and then a whole lot of work that took precedence (aka paying) and I never got to finish the painting to my satisfaction. My dear Day of the Dead piece got the shaft, and now sits, forlorn, in the corner of the studio. Someday, I might finish it.

In the mean time, I thought I might be able to ease a little of my frustration by at least showing it to you guys!

If You Offer It To The Dead, The Dead Will Take It.

Jim Bradshaw's 1st post here.

Greetings from South Jersey. I am surprised that I haven't heard of the Autumn Society until recently seeing that a good chunk of artists over at Sugarfrostedgoodness are members. I took notice after seeing Chogrin's contribution to the Day of the Dead show at Proximity. Man I wish I had been part of this group before the show came about. It would have been fun to contribute to the deathly action. This piece, painted on an old desk drawer with acrylics and pencil was done about a year and a half ago and sold at Fusion Gallery (now closed) in Collingswood, NJ. I also have a Kokeshi doll based on this painting here. Thanks for the invite, Chogrin. I look forward to being a part of this talented group of artists.

Dancin' and Dead...

So, this is the image that I submitted to last weeks show in Philly.
It's a little more handmade if you see it in person. But, I had a great little visit with people at the show and it was a good time had by all...

Hope you dig..

Dia de Los Muertos

Above is my piece for the Dia de Los Muertos show, “Juego Terminado” (aka “Game Over”). The game over screen in video games, signifying the death of your character, is typically a negative thing, but since the holiday is more of a celebratory take on death, I wanted it to have a positive and festive sentiment.

This show will consist of 40+ pieces of art from the Autumn Society's finest artists, each interpreting "Dia de los Muertos" in their own unique style. "Dia de los Muertos" (Day of the Dead), is typically a Mexican celebrated holiday, in which families bring offerings (such as food and mementos) to remember and celebrate their loved ones that have passed away. Come out and celebrate tonight, October 2nd 2009, for some fantastic original artwork, and some sugar skulls!

According to popular belief, the deceased have divine permission to visit friends and relatives on earth, and to share the pleasures of the living."- Chloe Sayer, Mexico: The Day of the Dead: An Anthology

A brief history of the Autumn Society
Established in 2006, the Autumn Society is a group of illustrators that started in Philadelphia and is now branching out worldwide. Comprised of over 200 members, the Autumn Society's goal is to share their artwork and other projects online, and to give exposure to local and emerging artists. They also publish zines, exhibit at comic conventions, and create group exhibitions for art galleries around the nation. Recently, the Autumn Society has gathered a lot of media buzz and is taking the Philadelphia art scene by storm.

So today is the big day and you're asking yourself how you're going to get there? Well, best way to do it is to take the Market-Frankford Line subway (EASTBOUND) and ride it all the way to the BERKS stop. From there, follow these directions and you should be set.

¿Qué es un fantasma? (What is a ghost?)

I dont know the whole story behind this man, either a ghost wondering the Mexican Desert endlessly searching for something, or a dark Shaman whose mind is between here and the spirit world. Its pretty much up to you to decide his story.
