La Llorona

"La Llorona was once a woman, until she turned crazy from jealousy of her husband cheating on her with another woman. Out of revenge and despair she drowns her own child and kills herself. Today she can be heard crying among rivers looking for her drowned child. She resides mostly around Mexico."

An Illustration of one my favorite folklore monsters, La Llorona. This is for the upcoming Tiki Machine Folklore book, put together by my friend Mike Collins. The book consists of different Illustrators and Animators from all around the globe, including the Autumn Society's Justin Gray, Anita Mejia, Alicia Neal, Anthony Pedro, and Bobby O'herlihy. Stay tuned for the official release sometime in September. Cheers!

there's a lot to say here Joe Game.

first of all let me just tell you how happy it makes me to see you pick La Llorona back up again. we've discussed how happy it makes me that you picked Ll Lorona in the first place, and my memories of various Mexican boogey men and women growing up in Texas, daring to say her name 3 times to the bathroom mirror in the dark.

but let me tell you what's really spectacular to see, more than anything, is what a leap ahead this piece is for you. i think the first foot rose and lunged with your Goonies piece, but here you landed a total step up

it's very graphic for you, to the point of symbolic. there's no fat anywhere, in representation, style, execution, or detail. i think it's maybe even the best you're Chogrin style has looked, or perhaps there's just so much more substance behind the decisions made all over. make no mistake though, it's still 1,000,000% a Chogrin piece.

there's just something so supremely excellent and iconic for you here, that you tell the story with elements, that there are three kinds of sorrow involved, all displayed quite uniquely, and your weathering isn't a textured afterthought, but something that actually makes it more mournful, especially at the bottom of her trail. even the way you've graduated your trademark dot patterns into something strong and resourceful, as your 6 lines that say "water" with the blue of the dots go from potentially extraneous to utterly essential

i think it's a great graduation and step into an exciting era of your artwork. great stuff my friend

i really really dig this.
i've seen la llorona represented many time, but never in such a graphic and updated way.
the style points are awesome, from the warning signs to the distressing.... but i really like the serpent shape of the spirit, more abstract than the traditional woman figure.
super great!

I am beside myself. Thank-you, thank-you, and thank-you for such wonderful comments. To be completely honest with you I wasn't so sure about this one, it was definitely experimental for me and its slowly growing on me. I really do appreciate the comments and feedback. Man, I love this group and this blog!
