DEATH FROM ABOVE & MORE

A pair of pieces to show to you today. First up is a print I did for Gallery 27's current show, "This Will Increase Your X" The theme is a clever spin on the usual pop/video game theme with pieces inspired by video game power up! My print is based on the blue shells of death from the MarioKart series.

It's the 3 color print and is about 11"x15.5" in size. The show opened last Friday and will be up for about a month. Visit gallery27chicago.com for more info.

Next print is for the upcoming Crazy 4 Cult show in NYC. That's right, gallery 1988 has taken their show on the road and brought their signature event to the east coast. Opening reception is August 9th from 6-9pm at 64 Gansevoort St, NY, NY 10014. Show runs for about a month. My piece is inspired by "Little Shop of Horrors" and the various store posters that were in the window of Mushnik's throughout the movie. For more info visit nineteeneightyeight.com

8-Bit Nightmare

Hi Everybody! Let me start by saying that I am honored to be part of The Autumn Society! I love all the art that I have seen posted on here and I'm excited to show you guys my work! :)

My name is Crystal Fontan, but I usually go by my alias, Bamboota!
I wanted to start by showing you guys this piece I did for the "When we Were Young" art show in La Boca Art Cafe in Newcastle, England curated by the amazing Bruce Parker! I call it "8-Bit Nightmare" mainly because I used to get real into video games when I was young and started to have dreams about them! lol

This is one of the print actual prints I've designed in a while, since I'm mainly a t-shirt designer! You can check out some of my other stuff on my portfolio site: www.crystalsmethod.com
You can also follow me on Twitter and Facebook!

Thanks guys for reading my first post and be on the look out for more post from me in the futurez! :)

Blue is Always Stronger

Here's my piece for the 8-Bit Champions show at La Flaq Gallery in Paris. It's titled "Blue is Always Stronger" as a reference to the 8-bit Legend of Zelda games where the blue version of the enemy always dealt out, and could withstand, more damage to Link.

Circus Charlie

My piece is a tribute to the Konami game Circus Charlie

I hadn't had much experience with this game on a nostalgia level-I was aware of when I was a kid but
I needed a refresher.

From what I gather the game is an existential horror story starring
the titular clown (you) whose whole life consists of running  and jumping through a never ending series of flaming hoops, compelled by the scrolling of the screen, a metaphor for man's struggle in a painful existence in the constant face of the oblivion of non-existence. It was no doubt inspired by the works of Samuel Beckett. It also has monkeys.

Illos for GamesTM in UK

Did some video-game themed illustrations for GamesTM magazine (sort of like the UK version of GameInformer here!). Figured everyone here loves video games and I hadn't posted in forever!! The article deals with the choices a player can make for their character, whether it be the places you go, or the morals you decide. So here's Gordon Freeman from Half-Life 2, Lara Croft, and Ezio from Assassin's Creed:

Mario's 25th Anniversary

Last week I received this special issue of Games Master magazine in the mail that pays tribute to 25 years of Mario. The magazine is bundled with several goodies, including a giant poster of my Mario's Closet illustration! For more info check out my blog entry on the subject.

Tron

Olivia Wilde as Quorra from Tron: Legacy. I had this idea while watching the movie and thought it would be a fun excuse to do a quick drawing that let me play with the movie's art style. The movie was alright; I wasn't wowed by it or anything, though admittedly I'm not a Tron fanatic. I think I mostly enjoy the idea of a movie having a video game aesthetic. I really like how the first movie looked like vector arcade games of the 1980s while the sequel very much had the feel of the science fiction shooter games of today.

Front Magazine Illustration

This is an illustration I finished not too long ago for an article about video game violence in Front magazine, which is based in the UK. If you are as confused as I was about some of the scenes represented here and what their corresponding video games are, I wrote a lot more info about the piece here.

The Art of Brutal Legend

This game is going to be epic in many ways. I think any artist of any kind would be inspired to see the love and craft that was put into this game. Enjoy!

GAMERS Goes TV!

"GAMERS, directed by Ben Gonyo, takes a close look into the mysterious MMO (massively multiplayer online) lifestyle. From World of Warcraft conventions, “Super Fans” to staunch critics, GAMERS reveals the lives of dedicated players across the country. Gonyo has translated the full-length film into a TV series in order to cover all gaming personalities across all gaming platforms.

Fellow gamers are invited to sign a petition (www.gamersfilm.com) to bring the new series directly to their living rooms. The new series will be submitted to major networks (such as G4, Spike, Hulu and MTV.) Unlike other gaming shows, this light hearted reality series focuses on the players and their in depth stories. GAMERS humorously exposes and highlights the best and most interesting lifestyles of North America's gaming fan base."
