Please Post Bills

For Gallery 1988‘s upcoming exhibition “Please Post Bills”, dedicated to comedic legend Bill Murray, I chose to do a companion piece to my Ghostbuster’s piece from “The 3G Show”. My piece, Ugly Little Spud, depicts the scene when Murray’s character, Peter Venkman, comes face to face with his first Class 5 Free-Roaming Vapor, better known as Slimer.

Blue is Always Stronger

Here's my piece for the 8-Bit Champions show at La Flaq Gallery in Paris. It's titled "Blue is Always Stronger" as a reference to the 8-bit Legend of Zelda games where the blue version of the enemy always dealt out, and could withstand, more damage to Link.

SUPER iam8bit - The Evolutionary Biology of Hyrule

Well it had been almost 3 years since LA-based production company iam8bit put on one of their legendary eponymous video game themed art shows, but it was worth the wait! SUPER iam8bit opened to the general public on August 11th at the recently renovated iam8bit headquarters located in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

For my contribution to the show, I created Magna Arbor Vitae Deku (traslated “The Great Deku Tree of Life”) a sprawling exploration of the evolutionary biology of the 200 most important species from the Legend of Zelda video game series. Complete with binomial Latin names (Zora Bellator and Zora Fluvialis share a common ancestor with the more peaceful species Zora Sapien, for example), the brances of the Deku tree trace the evolution of each species over millions of years. Forks in the branches indicate an extinct common ancestor of the species that follow.

Detail of some lifeforms from the Plantamalia phylum
Detail of some lifeforms from the Zora genus, the Blin genus, and some other amphibians and mammals
Detail of some lifeforms from the Primate order, as well as some other mammals
Detail of some lifeforms from the Draconem genus, the Dinosauria superorder, and the Aves class
All the species grouped by scientific binomials

Magna Arbor Vitae Deku will be available in a very limited edition of 15 at the SUPER iam8bit opening (#1 will be framed in a cool one-of-a-kind distressed wooden frame).

American Illustration 30

The two Shunga (Japanese erotica) inspired pieces I created for the Autumn Society‘s “East Meets East” exhibition last year at AxD Gallery have been selected to appear in American Illustration 30, which will be released in November of this year at the annual AI-AP party in NYC. Last year's selection was also from an Autumn Society show.

PAINTING WITH PIXELS (Featuring Jude Buffum)

In collaboration with I AM 8-BIT, our very own Jude Buffum designed an amazing pixel installation to commemorate the 25th Game Developer's Conference (gdconf.com). Check out the details & a video below!

"An art installation plus social experiment, PAINTING WITH PIXELS is a tribute to the perseverance of the pixel through several decades of gaming culture. Despite polygons prevailing in this modern area, the geometric prowess of the pixel is still one of intrigue and luster. Each conference attendee was gifted a single pixel (exactly 2x2 inches) to contrinute to a 20-by-8-foot pop portrait by famed designer Jude Buffum. Through the course of the convention's week long run, the large-scale image revealed itself (all 5,760 pixels of it), illustrating the true power of collaboration."

After These Messages

I posted this on my own blog a few days ago but forgot to share it with The Autumn Society. It's my newest chip-tunes collection, After These Messages, over 30 tracks inspired by classic TV shows, cartoons and commercials, all for a pay-what-you-want price!

Click the cover art above (by Jude Buffum) to get it!

"After These Messages is a collection of over 30 tracks inspired by classic TV shows, cartoons and commercials. Each track is arranged as the theme song for a theoretical 8-bit video game, much like titles found on the Nintendo Entertainment System. The full collection is available for a "pay-what-you-want" price and comes to you from the same artist that brought you 8-Bit Jesus. You can preview some of the tracks on Doctor Octoroc's YouTube channel. "

The 3G Show

Here are my pieces for The 3G Show. I have to say, I've done a lot of great shows at Gallery 1988, but I don't think I've ever been so excited for one of them. I'm just blown away by all the great work Autumn Society members have contributed, and that's saying something considering the caliber of work that Jensen shows there. Way to represent!

I wanted to pick a pivotal moment in each film, a scene where one of the characters makes a crucial discovery (or error).

In Ghostbusters, I always wondered what would have gone down had ghostbuster Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) answered “Yes!” to Gozer’s inquiry “Are you a god?” Would he have averted Stay-Puft peril? Sadly, we will never know.

In The Goonies, I often wondered what Sloth and Chunk were doing right before they swoop in to save the rest of the Goonies from the Fratellis. Were they spying from afar? Was seeing his mother make a pre-pubescent girl walk the plank at sword-point the impetus he needed to rebel against his own flesh and blood? Or had he simply watched too many Errol Flynn movies while chained up in the basement of their hideout?

I’ve probably watched the film Gremlins at least two dozen times, but it was only upon my most recent viewing that I realized that Billy’s girlfriend Kate is probably the most successful survivor of the film. Sure, Billy racks up the highest body count, but only because he [SPOILER ALERT] blows up the town movie theater. Even Billy’s mom kills more Gremlins in hand-to-claw combat in one of the most unforgettable mother-kicking-ass scenes of all time. But the fact that Kate survives who knows how many hours behind the bar at Dorry’s Tavern with barely a scratch and discovers (without any knowledge of Mogwai and Gremlin lore) that bright light is their weakness, and uses a Polaroid camera to escape to safety, is a testament to how much of a badass she is.

RadNerd Interview

Head on over to radnerd.com for an interview with yours truly. Topics of discussion include, but are not limited to: my childhood babysitter, corset lacing, and Tom Selleck's mustache.

The New Republic

I recently had the opportunity to work with the always wonderful Christine Car at The New Republic on this illustration for an article about the problem with the new full body security scanners. Aside from being an invasion of personal privacy, they don't always pick up concealed explosives.

Tonight: FEEL THE POWER!

Over 100 artists, including the Autumn Society's Chogrin, Tom Whalen, Jude Buffum, Danielle Rizzolo, and Dave Perillo. Premieres tonight!

Masters of the Universe

Shown above is my piece for Gallery 1988’s upcoming “Under the Influence: Masters of the Universe” show. Titled “Battle Bones”, it is a giclee print on canvas edition of 20, and 1/20 will come in this green hand-painted frame.
As a product of the eighties, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was a big part of my childhood, so I was super excited to be a part of this show. One thing I love about the characters is that they are so iconic and colorful that they can be reduced to very few pixels and still read.

Enlighten!

I was recently invited to design a lamp for Enlighten! One Night of Light, an artist lamp show benefiting inner-city arts. Each artist’s lamp design will be sold in a limited edition available for one night only. In addition, some artists will also create one original, handmade shade for a lamp that will be featured in a silent auction. A portion of all sales will benefit Inner-City Arts, an organization offering opportunities for at-risk children from Los Angeles schools to build artistic self-expression, enhancing their ability to perform both creatively and academically in challenging environments.

Enlighten! is being curated by Tornado Design and the lamps are being produced by Lamp-In-A-Box. If you cannot attend the show but would like to pre-order a lamp, click here.

My piece, titled “Zane’s Dilemma”, was inspired by the textile arts of William Morris and the English Arts and Crafts Movement.
