Dr. Sketchy's Adventure Time Tribute
I'm sure lots of you are aware of Dr. Sketchy, but I'll explain again for the newbies: Dr. Sketchy's Anti Art School is a hybrid figure drawing class and burlesque show, with emphasis on a fun, sexy, and social atmosphere. There are Dr Sketchy branches all over the US and in several countries, and the new branch in my hometown of Charleston, WV has been going strong.
Several months ago Chase Henderson, local artist and the guy in charge of our branch, brought up the idea of doing a session themed after the Cartoon Network show Adventure Time. I think it was mostly thrown out there as a silly "wouldn't this be funny?" sort of idea, but I thought it sounded great, so I encouraged him and offered to help.
Chase quickly set to work recruiting models, and it was officially decided that Charleston's September Dr. Sketchy would be an homage to Adventure Time. I know there are a lot of fans of the show on this blog, so I wanted to be sure and share the event with you guys.
I had a blast at the session and I'm sure everyone else did as well. The poses were clever and tied into the show/characters, costumes were accurate (well, I suppose they had to be creative with what the character's skivvies looked like,) props were cool (including a Beemo,) and everyone was excited to participate in the various contests.
Chase took all the photos you see here, showing off the hard work of the models: Molly Tilly as Finn and/or Fiona, Lavender Menace as Princess Bubblegum, and Lita Lane as Marceline.

Here are a couple of my drawings from the evening:
Apparently the main Dr Sketchy branch in NY loved this idea and we wouldn't be surprised to see a few more Adventure Time sessions start popping up across the country.

Hey everyone!
From the Trenches of Adventure Time is here!
“From the Trenches” is a behind-the-scenes video series of the super talented folks that make up the crew of the animated hit series, Adventure Time, by Pen Ward!
For our first segment, we interviewed the amazing & lead character designer of the show, Phil Rynda! In the video above, Phil shows you how to draw Finn, and gives some good advice for any artist.
Phil will also start teaching at CalArts this Thursday night! Congrats Phil and to the students that will be lucky to have him as a teacher!
So what are you waiting for? Get watching already and get inspired by the Rynda-ness!
A special thank-you to my friend and summer intern on Adventure Time, Nathan Connelly for helping me shoot and edit these segments. Check out the trailer for his ambitious student film, The Bayou Blues, by clicking HERE.

Finn & Jake will rock your world!
Check out this sweet cover for the next issue of Animation Magazine, featuring Adventure Time! The cover is illustrated by Phil Rynda and Thomas Herpich. Here's a quote from Adventure Time, creator, Pen Ward:“I like to doodle these characters and kind of figure out what their story is. In fact, I try to make everything stupider and simpler. Finn and Jake are two buddies who shoot the breeze about whatever nonsense is going on around them — just like anyone sitting on a porch might do.”
