S is for SLOTH!

Hi everyone. First I have to say that everyone's work for the 3G show really looks AWESOME-great job everybody! I am sorry I wont be at the opening to see the entire collection of work together and in person.

So, I bought and watched these movies because I hadnt seen them in YEARS. Watching them reminded me of some great times. Like wearing 1980s style tube socks, pulled up to my knees, you know with the BIG red and blue stripes.....Man, that was a good look. The 80's were definitely about distinction.

And these movies are no exception. What a great set of original films- great characters, hilarious nuances. All in all, and simply put, they are damn creative. It would be challenging to find another set of characters more deserving to be represented by such a collaborative group of art work as what is posted on this blog.

Anyway here are my paintings. Hope you like 'em

3G Pieces: Victorian Style!

Here are my pieces for the upcoming 3G show at Gallery 1988!! I've been a huge fan of the shows and artists that G1988 represents, so I'm really psyched to be a part of this show with the Autumn Society.

These were super fun to make; I was very inspired by old Victorian portraits of children with their pets & dolls, and was thinking about the iconic elements of all three movies that would pair well with children/young adults.  And people who know my art know I love drawing/painting ladies and animals, so this was a way to marry the theme with my style.

I wanted to also make them very somber and ornate, like small Victorian cameos, hence the framing technique.

The 3G Show

Here are my pieces for The 3G Show. I have to say, I've done a lot of great shows at Gallery 1988, but I don't think I've ever been so excited for one of them. I'm just blown away by all the great work Autumn Society members have contributed, and that's saying something considering the caliber of work that Jensen shows there. Way to represent!

I wanted to pick a pivotal moment in each film, a scene where one of the characters makes a crucial discovery (or error).

In Ghostbusters, I always wondered what would have gone down had ghostbuster Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) answered “Yes!” to Gozer’s inquiry “Are you a god?” Would he have averted Stay-Puft peril? Sadly, we will never know.

In The Goonies, I often wondered what Sloth and Chunk were doing right before they swoop in to save the rest of the Goonies from the Fratellis. Were they spying from afar? Was seeing his mother make a pre-pubescent girl walk the plank at sword-point the impetus he needed to rebel against his own flesh and blood? Or had he simply watched too many Errol Flynn movies while chained up in the basement of their hideout?

I’ve probably watched the film Gremlins at least two dozen times, but it was only upon my most recent viewing that I realized that Billy’s girlfriend Kate is probably the most successful survivor of the film. Sure, Billy racks up the highest body count, but only because he [SPOILER ALERT] blows up the town movie theater. Even Billy’s mom kills more Gremlins in hand-to-claw combat in one of the most unforgettable mother-kicking-ass scenes of all time. But the fact that Kate survives who knows how many hours behind the bar at Dorry’s Tavern with barely a scratch and discovers (without any knowledge of Mogwai and Gremlin lore) that bright light is their weakness, and uses a Polaroid camera to escape to safety, is a testament to how much of a badass she is.
