Un-Nerving Pencil!

I have done many small cartoons/illustrations for print before, but never have I been given  a full two page spread to illustrate, until recently.This story, written by Jess Bergman, tells the tale of Harriet Cole. Harriet was a maid/washwoman in the late 1800's who donated her body to science. Dr. Rufus Weaver was, using her donated corpse, able to accurately separate her nervous system from the rest of her, for the first time ever. Back then it was a scientific miracle. These days, it is still on display, but is mostly seen as a creepy thing in a case. 

A small portion of the comic was separated (much like her nervous system...ehhh folks?)  for the cover.

Week-Old Utensils

This was a thing I did for last weeks Philly Citypaper. It was their annual writing contest, and I illustrated a little somethin(s) for the winning story (which was about a teaspoon who ((spoiler)) eventually got surgery and became a bubble wand). I would say check it out, but either a) You already have, or B) You cant because its already Thursday and a new paper is in the boxes...in which case Im sorry.

Like always, I provided a few sketches. The story had an old, passed-down feeling to it, like an victorian fairy tale or an Aesop Fable. I wanted to keep the ideas fairy clean and the style as realistic as possible. I wasn't able to sit in on the meeting for this cover, so Im not entirely sure why the idea that went through was picked. I personally liked the cutout faces (lower right box).

This little inside piece depicted a key moment in the story, when the teaspoon is about to go down some stairs.

Ice Planet Hell

I think I can safely say we are all (across the states) living in an icy hell. Ice planet hell, Ice planet Hoth. Star Wars Marathon. I don't know, I got cabin fever. In any case, for your consideration, this new banner is for the Citypaper's critical mass banner.

So far, what huh?

Its nice to know that these little exercises are still available for me. I call them exercises because Im given the assignment last minute, and have only one or two hours to work on them. I have gotten decent at pumping these fun little buggers out in a short period of time, and still managing to enjoy them.

We are in the throws of the new year, pestilence, fire and water are our terror! WTF! The plans formulating at the EML barn are varied, mixed up, exciting and confusing. So if you get a chance, check back often. Im thinking of opening a shop! What the crap am I gonna sell?

Comics Issue, in the can!

The Citypaper's Comics Issue goes to the stands this week, so may I be the first to say how awesome it was to see a few Autumn Society Gremlins in the submission pile. This year we definitely received the finest quality and variety of submissions, and it should be a fairly good issue. In any case, heres a promo cartoon I did a few weeks back.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

I know it aint just me who has a major jones for some Halloween. Just the other day, walking home from home, I could've swore I smelled it in the air. In any case, for the holiday, I have turned our drab cover image into a depiction of the walking dead! In the meeting, someone asked if we could make Toomey into a Zombie, and all eyes turned to me as I doodled a picture of Bart Simpson on my notes.



For the more normal inside story, I whipped up a few cartoon versions of the forehead himself, depicting various points from the text. COLLECT EM ALL!

Couple Weeks left ! SUBMIT

So, here's the situation. We over here at the Citypaper have our annual Comics Issue coming up and we need the talented people of the Autumn Society to submit. Usually we get less comics than we need, and most of them are really bad. Low quality, low DPI, low humor, the whole bing bong. So please, SUBMIT WORK! It can be anything you want, ANYTHING!...as long as it fits our sizes, which are as follows:

QUARTER: 4.1 x 4.5
THIRD: 8.7 x 2.8
HALF: 8.7 x 4.5

DEADLINE IS NOVEMBER 15TH.

Now please, keep in mind, this is judged by a panel of people, not all of them funny. So if your work does not get in, do not fret. I believe all the other work is put online or something. But dont hold me to that, it may just be wishful thinking. Be creative, be vulgar if you want, but most of all, enjoy! Its a print gig, in what used to be a very reputable Alt-Weekly in Philadelphia!

QFEST COVER!?

So! The "Q FEST" is coming up, and this is our annual special issue for it. This is the first year the film fest has included gay horror movies, and we wanted to highlight this. To make a long story short, a photo was taken in California, and I put together this little bing bong together out of a photo, an illustration of the photo, the tranny and some other minor snippets. I hate to say it, but for some reason I flattened the files prematurely, which is something I NEVER do. Fail. I got the job done with the layered files before I caused that minor gaff, but Im still kicking myself.

I saved this layer, because I will definitely make it a background...or some Halloween thing.

Foiled at EVERY CORNER!

This cover was a nightmare process. It went through a prolonged sketching process, wrought with ridiculously changes to literal meaning. At the last minute a cover ad was tacked onto the thing, so there was all that ridiculous re-Frankensteining. The subject revolved on people in lockup who were forced to stay in for prolonged periods of time for not having the funds to pay their bail. The tick marks on the wrist (as you can see below) , which were meant to show off the time spent inside, were basically omitted. AND NOW, I have seen that the goddamn thing has printed awfully. Thats actually not too much a surprise, we have an awful printer. You get what you pay for.


I was actually partial to this more severe b/w version. The tick marks showed off in very tight bright red. Maybe its just my red fetish.

Yet again I was commissioned to illustrate the our annual "Sumer Fun Guide", which last year I so aptly called "the week that I forgot". Again this years missing week was everything I thought it was, except it also made me a little sick. But it was all worth it, because I managed to draw the best Predator I ever have!

Holy Crap.

In light of the recent elections, for your approval is Count Specter. Its a direct rip of the "Taste the blood of Dracula" poster, easily one of the best vampire movies. Christopher Lee as Dracula...Hammer Horror...So good.

P.s. Cant wait to see everyone's "90's Show" pieces. This seemed like such a strange mix of a show, I could hardly figure out what to do.

This Weeks Cover

After having the story pushed farther and farther back, I present this weeks cover. Its a long one, about the cities "DROP" program, where officials are legally bankrupting the cities coffer. Check it out, its on the streets!

New Cover!

This week's cover was for an upcoming movie about the Barnes Foundation The whole idea came from and unrealized idea I had for another project. It was fun to finally get to finish an idea that never came to be, especially one where so many little styles came together in a piece where the end product was fairly different from my usual work.Come see more o' my crap Here.

Robots and Scientists...and space

This week the paper is releasing its Science Issue, and to cover it all we have this sweet image of a friggin' robot. This thing looked pretty cool, but I thought its movement was a little limited. Apparently its a major deal, utilizing the energies of both American and Korean Robotics teams. I seem to remember having a dinosaur robot toy as a kid that did all the stuff this guy did (?) I dont know, thats why I make the pictures.

The photos were taken by our resident photographer Neal Santos (Check his site here for some really nice work), and the text done by a fellow designer. I added color and texture work in photoshop and illustrator, making a very subtle lunar landscape (seen below) and all the stars and space gasses. In the end the cropped shot was used to make room for ad space? I hate that.
