Fake Vintage Japanese Ad Characters

Hi Everyone!! I've been invited to this amazing collective, and just stoping by to introduce myself.

My name is Juan Molinet, I'm an illustrator and character designer from Buenos Aires, and my first post is about a series of fictional vintage japanese ad mascots.

I'm planning to do between 12 and 20 of these japanese characters. I don't know if i should turn some of them into toys, but I like the idea. Also the type is custom made, I find designing custom type to be a lot of fun!

Hope you like them!

Cheers!

Juan

Clown Prince

Hey all,
This is my Joker for the show. I was thinking of a lot of stuff while working on this, including Picasso's harlequins, Patrick Bateman in American Psycho, Gwynplaine from The Man Who Laughs (admittedly the film version was an influence on the original Joker anyway), and Hughes-esque wealthy eccentrics in general.

There's some progress shots over at my blog- I figured I wouldn't clutter up the blog here with 'em.

In Tyler We Trust

Not sure i'm in love with the background. A friend of mine suggested making a building behind him with the happy face explosion. I don't know why i didn't think of that in the first place. Maybe i'll visit this again at some point... You're the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world.

* Zines, Themes, Zines *

With so many themes and ideas to draw, I've decided to collect some ideas specifically in Zine (small book (5.5" X 8.5")) format. With that said these themes don't have any final deadlines yet, I basically want to see how many would contribute to each. If we could have about 20 entries in each, we would have a solid book to put out for limited release. These are the themes:

1. Classic Marvel & DC Comics Characters - Marvel and DC characters as the way they first appeared in comics. Example: Captain America, Iron-man, Spider-man, Wolverine, Green Lantern, Superman, Wonderwoman, Batman, etc...

Art by Eamon Dougherty

2. Golden Age Animated Cartoons - Anything from the 1900's to the 1940's. Some examples are: Mickey Mouse, Bosko, Betty Boop, Koko the clown, Popeye, Gertie the Dinosaur, Little Nemo, Flip the Frog, Willie Whopper, Silly Symphonies, Merrie Melodies, etc...

Art by Craig Parrillo

3. ANIME (Japanese Animation) Characters - Anything from Astro Boy, to Dragon Ball Z, to Death Note.

Art by Eamon Dougherty

4. 80's Animated Cartoon Characters - Any cartoon that you grew up with in the 80's. Examples: Ninja Turtles, Ghostbusters, Camp Candy, Centurions, Dinosaucers, Dino Riders, Thundercats, He-Man, GI Joe, Transformers, etc...

5. Video Game Characters - (1970's to now) Anything goes from Pong, To Mario Bros, to Left 4 Dead.

Art by Craig Parrillo

These zines are obviously very character based, so its a bit limited, but I know some of you will rise to the challenge to draw your own versions of your favorite characters from these different periods and themes.
If interested or have any questions, comment here or e-mail me at:

chogrin@gmail.com

I'd like to have some of these ready for comic shops, blogs, publications, and events of early 2009. Including: Cartoon Brew, Drawn, Cereal Geek Magazine, Baltimore Comic Con 2009, SPX 2009, MoCCa 2009, Otakon 2009, EMG Magazine, and possibly San Diego Comic Con 2009. That is all for now, sorry for the long post!

* Classic Disney *

Recently my Art Director bought an old Disney book, called the "Art of Walt Disney" for only $1! This book is filled with great sketches, stills, and photos. A lot of the artwork comes from the one and only, Ub Iwerks, an animation pioneer, wizard and a huge inspiration and influence for the way I work. I'll be writing more on him later, but for now I hope you enjoy these scans I made from the book.

Cheers!

P.S. Thanks again Eamon for posting on Shotaro Ishinomori. He's amazing and also a big influence on my work, along with Tezuka, Yokoyama & Toriyama!

Comic Stuffs in the Works

Here is a sneak peak of some characters I'm developing, created by Nick Tapalansky, for a future comic project, Paranormal Normality. They are, in order, Jackson, Christina, Artie, Dolph, Jen, Marty and Sharon. Some of these aren't the final designs, but mostly they are pretty close. Check out Nick's other comic, with art by UArts' own Alex Eckman Lawn, Awakening.

Happy trails!
