Kraid, Darunia, and Wario Busts

Hey guys! here's my three pieces for the upcoming 3nes show at The Bottleneck Gallery. Since I've already sculpted Motherbrain and Bowser, I decided to go with Kraid and Wario. I also picked Darunia as my Legend of Zelda piece because we all know his dance bit was one of the high points of Ocarina of Time. If you're in the area definitely check out the show LINK

8-Bit Nightmare

Hi Everybody! Let me start by saying that I am honored to be part of The Autumn Society! I love all the art that I have seen posted on here and I'm excited to show you guys my work! :)

My name is Crystal Fontan, but I usually go by my alias, Bamboota!
I wanted to start by showing you guys this piece I did for the "When we Were Young" art show in La Boca Art Cafe in Newcastle, England curated by the amazing Bruce Parker! I call it "8-Bit Nightmare" mainly because I used to get real into video games when I was young and started to have dreams about them! lol

This is one of the print actual prints I've designed in a while, since I'm mainly a t-shirt designer! You can check out some of my other stuff on my portfolio site: www.crystalsmethod.com
You can also follow me on Twitter and Facebook!

Thanks guys for reading my first post and be on the look out for more post from me in the futurez! :)

"Down at the Barcade..."

This is my submission to Gallery 1988's "Old School Video Game Art Show." I decided to try and show what video game characters might do after a long hard day of fighting off a gorilla, chasing after a hungry yellow sphere, our endlessly pouring beers for thirsty customers (bartenders are never off-duty...). This was done using Micron ink pens and Prismacolor markers. The original piece and a very small edition of prints will be available at the show, and on the gallery's website the day after the show.

8-Bit Calavera

Here is my 8-Bit Calavera. I totally dig the Mario universe of characters and cool worlds and have been wanting to do an illustration with them for awhile now. I also dig skulls so this was double the fun. There are some really fine looking pieces being posted around here!

Mario's Closet

Some of you may have seen this image online recently, and I am happy to announce that it is the first thing I've done that has gone completely viral. It's one of my many t shirt designs for Splitreason.com, but for whatever reason this one in particular has taken off like a rocket. I've been trying to collect all the sites and blogs that have written an article about it, but there are literally too many to keep track of at this point. It actually crashed Splitreason's site and voting system yesterday, and over 1,000 people have already signed up to be notified when the shirt goes up for sale. I've also been working with them to get a print or poster made, as I've been getting tons of requests for them.

You can check out the Splitreason page and vote on it here, and check out the post on my personal blog about it here.

There Will Be Brawl

Recently my friend Matt Hepler introduced me to this wonderful miniseries called "There Will Be Brawl," featuring your favorite Super Mario Bros in a way you've never seen them before. This great project is spearheaded by Matthew Mercer and Zach Grafton. Head on over to EscapistMagazine.com to view all seven gritty episodes. I thought this would blend well with our current video game mania we've had this entire month.
WARNING: NOT INTENEDED FOR VIEWERS UNDER THE AGE OF 17

"The first installment of the hit miniseries: There Will Be Brawl. Welcome to a world of dark humor starring the classic game characters you thought you knew and loved."

Also, head on over to the "There Will Be Brawl" official website, where you can download awesome desktops like this one:

Pick a Box

This is the piece I chose when asked if I would like to submit a last minute entry for the 8-Bit & Beyond show. My friend Chris who runs Cubeecraft.com was able to make it to the reception and told me he overheard good things being said about it, which is always encouraging!

I created this piece not too long after I discovered the exhibition (and subsequent book) I Am 8 Bit. The art school I attended was full of very old school professors who, despite being great teachers and people in general, mostly frowned upon any student-created art that related to cartooning or pop culture. I Am 8 Bit was my wake up call to serious artists doing work based around subjects that I was constantly being told to avoid. The artists were not only creating amazing work based on video games, but getting a show and book that received national attention and praise. It gave me an overwhelming sense of "You can do that?!" and validated my efforts; just like the all the great work featured in 8-Bit & Beyond has done.

L is for Loser (last minute entry)

My CMYK frustration this morning led me to create this quick piece
and also I had to do a Luigi one, after all the game is called SuperMario Bros.

The Lode Runner character was kinda weird dont u think?
I couldnt really know if it was a kid or a man and what the outfit really was.
So this is just my version on him .
(or at least what my brain processed as his shape from the vague pixel info)

8-Bit & Beyond: Mushroom Recession

Here's a sneak peak at my piece for the 8-Bit & Beyond show, titled "Mushroom Recession". For this show, I wanted to create an image that reflected the current state of the economy, so I looked at games that had some sort of monetary system as a component of the interface. I also wanted to highlight the character's desperation, but do so in a way that was somewhat light hearted and humorous. Whenever I use an existing game as the basis for a piece I like to push it to the next level and ask absurd questions like "Where do those bottomless pits actually go to?" Mario was a perfect fit for this concept, and is also more widely known than some of the other game characters I could have chosen. Even though my work is inspired by games and my love of classic game imagery, I prefer it to be accessible to everyone, even if there are elements that only gamers would appreciate.
Prints can be purchased from my blog: http://judebuffum.wordpress.com/shop/

Posting Pretty Pink Princess Peach Pinup!

Hey everybody!

I was really excited to hear that we have yet another show at Brave New Worlds! Here's my rendition of Mario's favorite damsel in distress. Hope you like her :)

Mr. Goomba

Here's my newest piece for the show " 8 bits and beyond ", i guess for those who had a normal infancy full of videgames, will remember those little levels full of goombas on super mario bros.
