Here are my two pieces for the upcoming old school video game themed art show at gallery1988 (Venice). The show opens Friday October 26th and runs for about a month.

The first is a four panel acrylic painting on wood. Each panel is 12" x 12". I actually did this piece a couple years ago with the hope that someday it would be a part of g1988's I am 8-bit shows. I'm glad I could finally dust it off and get it out of my basement.

The second piece is a print I just finished up on to go with my koopa toopa series. Its a three color, hand pulled screen print measuring 19" x 12". Both will be on sale through g1988's website at nineteeneightyeight.com

My first AS tribute show piece!

This piece definitely deviates quite a bit from my usual style but I had a lot of fun with it. So stoked for Friday! Everything looks amazing!

Sometimes when a relationship dies, you cant escape the ghost of that person. Memories seem to follow and torture you everywhere you go. Your especially not safe in your own house. That's what this picture is about. Hopefully this exorcism helps me.

Giant Robot LA | Post It Note Show 6

I am very excited and humbled to be invited into the Giant Robot LA | Post It Note 6 show, curated by Mark Todd and Esther Pearl Watson.

For the post it notes I am submitting, I thought I would take random images from my sketch book and killed sketches to be made into painted images. Some pieces are deep, meaningful and have a back story, while others I made because I thought they would make a cool images. Who doesn't want to make cool stuff?

The Opening will be at Giant Robot in Los Angeles, CA on December 11th. Huge thanks to Mark and Esther for inviting me to be part of the show.

8-Bit Calavera Submission

My submission for 8-Bit Calavera:

Australopithicus afarensis is known as the earliest known true hominid on the path to Homo Sapians (us). Only found on the continent of Africa 2.9 - 3.6 MYA.

In keeping true to the theme of Dia de los Muertos, I felt it was fitting to honor this long gone ancestor of ours. For without its struggle for survival would we be here today?

They had ape sized brains, large jaws and teeth. Due to the changing landscape of Africa, Australopithicus was forced down from the trees in search of food. They lived in social groups for protection. Scavenging meat may have sparked brain growth and set us on the long path to humanity.

Only a portion of the skull is pictured on my cartridge. It is after the fossil discovered by J.T. Robinson, in Sterkfontein, South Africa in 1949. The same goes for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Nintendo is supremely important in the evolution of video games. Would video games be where they are today with out this revolutionary system?

Save it for a Rainy Day

Last May/June, I was lucky enough to work with the awesome brothers that run Confitte, based out of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Their mission statement says "We are a young design label, which seeks to merge in their products that we believe are important values such as innovation, quality, art and respect for the environment."
The assignment was simple or so it seemed. The art direction was, do whatever I wanted, as long as it has something to do with nature, and hand lettering that had a message dealing with money. I struggled for days until I finally came up with a solution that best served for the product. Something I always strived for, was to take the spontaneity/experimentation of my sketch books and then in turn apply it to my illustration work. Working as a conceptual illustrator tends to be less liberating at times when trying to make new, bold artistic choices and take liberties in new directions without straying to far from what a client would expect from you.

I am extremely excited, held my breath for many months until the product went live until showing off this labor of love.
Fun fact about this project: I usually work digitally, but for this project I hand painted it in acrylic. I don't see much of a difference between this and my regular work, do you?

This show definitely raised the bar on ASOP shows. I had no idea there were going to be as many participants as there are. Every one stepped it up and we will be reppin it hard out west. Especially Pete and Jude, you guys always impress every time.

Okay so no groundbreaking creativity points on these, I know. I'm really bummed mine are so straight up and boring compared to every one's. I wasn't sure I was participating and by the time I got around to these the deadline loomed ever closer and with three to do I had to do some thing I knew I could handle. So I decided to round out my portfolio with some females, some thing I needed. I also thought 3G = 3gals could work. I wish I could be at this opening.

Thanks to Joe as always for networking, and thanks to every one posting, commenting, and sharing ideas and work.

Prayer to Mothra

"If we were to call for help, over time, over sea, like a wave, you'd come"
8"X10"
acrylic on panel

This picture features Mothra (or Mosura) in her larval stage headed toward Tokyo Bay to answer a distress call by the Shobijin (small fairy twins who can communicate with Mothra telepathically). The title of the painting is part of Mothra's prayer or song the Twins sing to contact Mothra. Mothra often aids as an ally to Godzilla but more often an enemy and worthy adversary to the "King of Monsters"

I had a tons of fun painting this, more then I thought I would, something about a giant worm crashing through the waves to cause destruction I guess. But I really had more fun hanging out watching Godzilla movies for research, Hope fully soon I would like to a King Ghidorah piece!!

Rancho La Brea

"To Live and Die in L.A."
acrylic on panel
11" X 14"

Downtown Los Angeles, the last Ice Age. Sometimes disguised by a thin layer of water, leaves or other debris, asphalt seeps through the ground from deep within the earth under southern California. Unsuspecting large grazing animals searching for a drink or stumbling too near would become trapped, like flies to fly paper. A few inches of asphalt would be able to hold an animal as large a Mammoth or Mastodon (pictured). The animals would die from dehydration or exposure. The stench of the dead would attract scavengers and predators from miles around, who would also become trapped. For every one herbivore six predator remains have been found. Most Commonly the Dire Wolf (pictured).

The End of Days

Last of the Giant Deer
acrylic on panel
12"X16"

Some where in Northern Europe 10,000 years ago. The Climate was changing, food was becoming scarce, and worst of all hungry wolves, humans, and lions roamed in hunting packs. Unable to seek refuge in the forests because of those enormous 10ft antlers the largest deer the earth would ever see stood at the edge of extinction. A snow began to fall.

also thank you to Fish who dropped that PS photomerge tutorial a few months back you've saved me hours of frustration
