Vintage Pabst Blue Ribbon Crate by Jeffro Kilpatrick

I finally got a chance to get these photos and scans up on the web here. I finished the Pabst Blue Ribbon vintage crate a couple weeks back. Thanks to my buddy Gravy for his patience and Pabst's generosity for all the sponsorship they've given me and the Philly Cartoonist Society over the years. I drew all the images on sticker paper, inked them with waterproof Micron pens, then colored them with waterproof markers, like Prismacolors. I also used some white colored pencil for highlights. Then I cut out the shapes with an razor and stuck the pieces to various sides of the crate. Then I used waterproof ink for the "Pabst" lettering on the top of the crate and the ink coming from the pen of the "Jeff" cartoon. Thanks to Joannie for challenging me to be a little more careful with the ink and not settle for laziness. When I was finished laying it out, I sealed the whole crate with about five coats of high gloss acrylic polyurethane. Since the sealant was water-based, I had to use all waterproof materials on the initial drawings. I used the water-based so it didn't yellow the sticker paper. Anyways, below are the final scans and then photos of how they look on the crate. Now I just have to get it back to Pabst...

I present these three little rascals. I heard about the show a while back, but was only invited recently to join it. The problem was, I was just about to go on vacation! But I put a down payment on a few groggy mornings to get these done. I don't know why I ultimately went for self portraits, it just seemed the thing to do for me. I try to make my pieces more personal, even if they deal with pop culture. Making yourself a character from the movie is a bit blatant, and might be a little narcissistic, but I really like these pieces. Simple. Fun?

In any case, Im really honored to join such great artists contributing to the show. Although I wont be able to attend, I have really enjoyed seeing all the great work you all have put up.

Artist Collaboration with Mentally Challenged

I am participating in a collaboration between artists and the mentally handicapped in which each participant creates "50%" (ish) of a piece and then hands it over to their counterpart for completion. I completed my first half for submission tonight and will receive my buddy's half-completed piece next week.

This is such an interesting project for me because it requires the artists to stifle their egos and allow some one with a unique vision have a voice on the same page or canvas; these folks are using art as a way to express themselves just as we are.

Anyway, here's the first half of mine. It's modest and simple but I like the idea of my partner imagining what they'd like to put on/around the tv screen. Apologies for the low grade camera photo.


I'll post the "After" picture as well as details for the opening, which I believe will be in April at the Magic Garden.
